Key Largo

Key Largo is located in the upper Florida Keys and is the self-proclaimed Dive Capital of the world. Also called ‘Cayo Largo’ by the Spanish meaning Long Key, the destination has a large history with pirates, wreckers and natives inhabiting the islands. It has some of the most captivating botanical scenery in Florida.

The area is made up of three communities, North Key Largo, Key Largo and Tavernier, all of which offer the most beautiful sunsets after spending a day on the tranquil beaches and in turquoise waters. Key Largo is the perfect diving destination with a variety of companies to show you some of the best underwater sights.

It is home to the world’s largest artificial reef and the John Pennekamp Coral Reef Underwater State Park. This John Pennekamp State Park was America’s first underwater state park and it has a Coral Reef Theatre and beach. Key Largo has been featured in various movies due to its beautiful location and fantastic weather.

The area is home to two state parks, a national park and a national marine sanctuary as well as a number of attractions on and off-shore. There are plenty of arts and culture opportunities as well as eco tours, dolphin encounters and motorbike rentals. You can visit the marinas of Key Largo or take a trip to a gallery or museum for the day. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is a fantastic experience for underwater activities such as snorkelling and water sport activities.

Fishing is also a great opportunity and world records are regularly broken. On land, restaurants will cook the freshest fish from the same day catch. Every day can be different in this area of Florida as there is so much to discover and so many opportunities for sightseeing as well as relaxing.

Key Largo is the most North of the Florida Keys and is an hour’s drive away from South Florida’s two major airports. Almost everything outside of the Key West is close to the highway, therefore automotive transportation is very handy for exploring the area. There are taxis and regular shuttles available as well as bike rental services so you can get around the area however you’d like.
